The Powerscourt Distillery Launches Fercullen 18-Year-Old Single Malt

I hope to review Fercullen 18 properly after I (hopefully) manage to visit the new Powerscourt Distillery before the end of the year. Unfortunately, I missed the official opening event some weeks ago. Following my own visit, I hope to feature both the new Distillery and their Fercullen Whiskeys on Whiskeyblogger.com. In the meantime, here is the official press release for what some industry leaders in the Irish Whiskey sector have described as the most significant Irish Whiskey Release of 2019.

November 13th, 2019: The Powerscourt Distillery proudly unveils Fercullen 18-Year-Old Irish Whiskey, a limited release Irish single malt.  This latest expression from The Powerscourt Distillery joins the Fercullen family of award-winning, premium Irish whiskeys which include Fercullen 10-Year-Old Single Grain Whiskey, Fercullen Premium Blend Irish Whiskey and Fercullen 14-Year-Old Single Malt Whiskey.

Released by Master Distiller Noel Sweeney, Fercullen 18 Year Old Single Malt has been matured in bourbon barrels for over 18 years to deliver an exceptional whiskey perfect for celebrating special moments. Tasting notes reveal oak and bourbon tones which marry to give plenty of depth and character while retaining exquisitely balanced flavours:

Nose:  Honey, vanilla, sweet malty, spice, almonds, cinnamon, ripe fruits, rich cherries, plums and oak wood.

Palate: Smooth.  Layer upon layer of sweet, creamy malt, vanilla, ripe fruits, syrupy caramel, spice and crisp oak.

Finish:  Malty to start with a long-lasting sweet spice, malt and fruity finish.

Fercullen 18 Year Old Single Malt launches a year after the Fercullen range was first introduced with a collection of three premium whiskey expressions.  Taking its name from  ‘FeraCulann’, the Gaelic name given to the ancient and strategically important lands that surround and encompass Powerscourt Estate, this location has long been regarded as a special place.  Set against the stunning backdrop of the great Sugarloaf Mountain and enjoying a long heritage of dedication and craftsmanship, Powerscourt is an inspiring location that has become one of Ireland’s most treasured estates.

With an underground lake of the purest Wicklow water, close proximity to rich farming lands and a temperate coastline climate, it sets the perfect stage for distilling and maturing Irish whiskey.  Having formerly distilled the spirit used in the Fercullen range, Noel is now also responsible for the new spirit being produced and laid down by the distillery – a unique attribute on today’s Irish whiskey landscape.

The Powerscourt Distillery will be celebrating the launch of Fercullen 18-Year-Old Single Malt at Whiskey Live in Dublin Castle on November 22nd and 23rd and at Taste Festive in the RDS from November 28th to December 1stFercullen 18-Year-Old Single Malt Whiskey is available to purchase from The Celtic Whiskey Shop, L. Mulligans, Mitchell & Sons, James Fox, Redmonds in Ranelagh and at The Powerscourt Distillery Visitor Centre gift shop and online from www.powerscourtdistillery.com and retails at €140.
